The Design Files Open House: Final Day!

4 Dec

THE DESIGN FILES OPEN HOUSE  is a unique collaboration between The Design Files and The Project Agency.

YES it’s a pop-up. But it’s not in a vacant shop front or a shipping container. For one week in December we’re transforming a stunning residential home in Fitzroy, Melbourne, to create a temporary retail event unlike any other.

A natural progression for Australia’s most popular design blog, THE DESIGN FILES OPEN HOUSE is the ultimate stylised Melbourne home, with an added bonus – everything is for sale! From bedlinen to books, artwork, furniture, kitchenware and lighting, each and every item can be purchased on the spot.

We have carefully selected a group of local designers, artists, makers and retailers whose beautiful wares will fill this space. There’ll be a cafe on the roof deck, a flower stall by a fabulous local floral designer, cooking demonstrations in the modern open-plan kitchen, and events every day and night ….more.

GODWIN BRADBEER:  Intermezzo  November 10 – December 3 2011

Stark and mysterious, Godwin Bradbeerʼs latest exhibition of drawings at James Makin Gallery continues his extraordinary investigation of the physical and metaphysical human form. After a highly successful show at James Makin Gallery in 2010, he returns with a series of over 12 new and technically impressive works in his latest show Intermezzo.

MILAN MILOJEVIC:  Other Worlds and Curiosities,  November 10 – December 3, 2011

Milan Milojevic’s work contains a cast of mythical hybrid creatures that have existed in art and literature since antiquity, and in this solo exhibition he has created a fantastic universe filled with invented flora and fauna. His ‘other worlds’ are rendered through combining the latest digital printmaking technologies layered with etching and woodcut techniques, in an innovative combination of old and new approaches. The artist often draws on 18th-19th century engravings and woodcuts that documented flora and fauna from the New World, created as naturalists attempted to describe foreign, alien looking natural forms. This exhibition sees Milojevic continue his investigation into an imaginative universe that leaps off the sheet with electric colour and kaleidoscopic intensity…….. more.

For the past twelve months Galerie Montmartre has been working with a renowned European colleague, squirreling away a large collection of rare original vintage posters.

Now they are ready. Spring is in the air, the sun is shining, and they feel the time is right to share this exclusive exhibition featuring the works of Savignac, Auriac, Morvan & their many talented associates.

Quirky, colourful, and with a unique ‘joie de vivre’, these posters are the original ‘art for the people’ from the retro era (1950’s – 1980’s) and Galerie Montmartre is THE place for these Mid-Century Modern Masters.

This is a special opportunity to view the exhibition as a whole, and acquire a rare work for your own collection.

Come past the gallery, say hello to Michelle…. and most importantly enjoy this splendid collection of rare vintage posters.

Where:   Galerie Montmartre, rear 197B Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC. Entry via Moor St.

All I Have I Hope to Keep

Gallery Eight presents….

ALL I HAVE I HOPE TO KEEP

by Australian artists Thomas C. Chung & Amanda Humphries.

Two-person exhibition @ Gallery Eight – Sydney (AUSTRALIA)

16 September 2011 – 6 October 2011

Everything is experienced through play in this exhibition. It is the first part of a two part show that suggests ideas of the loneliness and detachment raised in an ever ‘sensation-simulated’ world. Amanda and Thomas are threading together alternative worlds to keep pace with the real one, creating suspended, timeless worlds that will never leave you. Using motifs of childhood fantasies and hand-crafted objects, they are taking us on adventures in worlds that are intangible.

All I Have I Hope To Keep creates an alternative universe that envelopes the viewer in a nostalgic utopia. So pack your knitted umbrella, there might be a thunderstorm of birds and battleships to contend with.

Yanni Floros: An inquisition of human development

I’ve always been interested in technology, especially the design of things and the way they’re put together. It goes deeper than that, when I view humanity as a whole I have to ask ‘what is it about us that wants to make all this?’ That question affords me the ability to examine not only the ‘why’ but also the final product. From our humble beginnings we’ve demonstrated an amazing ability for progress, we’ve wanted ‘better’ and ‘more’, technology is only a part of it, but for me and the society we live in today it’s the part accessible and relatable for everyone. As we hurtle towards an unknown and uncertain future, technology and the way we use it will become increasingly more important. It has already become so integrated into our lives that I doubt many of us could live without it. As we build more and invent more, are we helping our humanity or are we robbing ourselves of it? ……….read more
